Honor has introduced a groundbreaking concept device it calls the “Robot Phone,” featuring an AI-driven gimbal camera that unfolds from the back of the phone to capture photos and video from virtually any angle. This innovative design allows the camera to operate independently, moving into different positions without manual adjustment.
In a teaser video, the phone appears as a somewhat thick but otherwise standard-looking smartphone, marked with an alpha symbol instead of the usual Honor logo. This represents the company’s “Alpha Plan” vision. The most noticeable feature is a two-part camera module, from which a flexible arm extends with a playful giggle sound effect. This arm enables the main camera to flip upward for selfies and adjust to various shooting perspectives, seemingly on its own.
This positions the Robot Phone as a more sophisticated evolution of earlier flip-camera models, such as the Asus Zenfone 6 from 2019. The gimbal-style mechanism resembles that of the DJI Osmo Pocket, but Honor emphasizes that its version incorporates AI capabilities for intelligent framing and even emotional interactions.
According to the company, the Robot Phone is envisioned as more than just a communication device, it aims to be an emotional companion that adapts and evolves autonomously. The camera can film while the phone lies flat, look around independently, and even react to its surroundings, as suggested in the promotional material.
When the camera arm is folded away, the device looks like a conventional smartphone. Honor plans to share additional details, and possibly a physical demonstration, at Mobile World Congress next spring. The Robot Phone was unveiled as a surprise announcement following the launch of Honor’s two Magic 8 flagship phones, which are set to release in China this month and internationally before year’s end.
