Lexar has officially launched its ES5 Magnetic Portable SSD, a device that promises both high-speed performance and remarkable durability for mobile users. Initially unveiled in July, the storage solution is now available for purchase, offering a 1TB model at $119.99 and a 2TB option for $199.99. A larger 4TB version is also in development, though consumers will need to wait until early 2026 for its release.
Engineered for broad compatibility, the ES5 connects to any device with a USB port and achieves read and write speeds reaching 2000MB/s. While it is noticeably bigger than Lexar’s earlier Professional Go Portable SSD, it delivers double the performance. The drive works seamlessly with tablets and smartphones, but Lexar has tailored it especially for Apple enthusiasts by integrating MagSafe support. This allows the SSD to attach magnetically to the back of any MagSafe‑compatible iPhone. For non‑MagSafe gadgets, Lexar provides an adhesive metal ring to mount the drive on various surfaces.
A short USB‑C cable is included, designed to connect to the SSD much like a lanyard. This thoughtful accessory enhances portability while keeping the setup tidy. When used with an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, the ES5 enables 4K Apple ProRes video recording at up to 60 frames per second. Future iPhone models, such as the iPhone 16 and 17, will support even higher frame rates up to 120fps. Samsung Galaxy S25 users aren’t left out, the drive can handle Samsung Pro Video recording at 8K and 30fps.
Durability is a key selling point for the ES5. It carries an IP65 rating, which means it resists dust and water splashes, though it isn’t designed to be submerged. More impressively, Lexar states the drive can survive drops from as high as 3 meters, just under 10 feet, making it a reliable choice for users on the move.
