Itch.io has started restoring select adult-themed games to its platform after temporarily removing them last month due to pressure from conservative organizations and payment processors. The reinstated content, however, is limited to free titles, those not requiring transactions, which remain entangled in ongoing financial disputes.

The indie marketplace faced backlash after conservative group Collective Shout campaigned against platforms hosting NSFW material, alleging some games promoted harmful themes. This led to payment processors scrutinizing transactions, forcing Itch.io and Steam to delist thousands of adult-oriented games. While Steam removed hundreds of titles, Itch.io reportedly took down over 20,000, disproportionately affecting marginalized creators, including queer, trans, and BIPOC developers.

Leaf Corcoran, Itch.io’s founder, confirmed ongoing negotiations with payment providers, emphasizing a cautious approach to reintroducing paid content. Stripe, one of Itch’s earliest processors, explicitly refuses to support material “designed for sexual gratification,” complicating the platform’s ability to monetize such games. Meanwhile, Mastercard denied directly evaluating or restricting games, stating its network permits lawful purchases but requires merchants to enforce controls against illegal content.

The removals have drawn criticism from developers and players alike. Cara Cadaver, creator of Vile: Exhumed, claims her game was wrongly flagged for explicit content when it only implied mature themes. Losing access to Steam, the largest digital storefront, severely limits visibility and revenue for indie creators, she argues. Valve has remained silent on recent developments but previously cited compliance with processor policies as the reason for removals.

To address concerns, Itch.io plans to implement a content warning system for adult material while exploring alternative payment solutions. The platform’s struggle highlights broader tensions between creative freedom, financial gatekeeping, and advocacy groups’ influence over digital marketplaces. For now, free NSFW games are trickling back, but the future of paid adult content remains uncertain.
