Steam Survey Shows Gamers Are Running Out of Storage Space

▼ Summary

– The Steam Hardware Survey’s methodology is flawed as it only includes dedicated PC gamers who opt in, skewing results toward more engaged users.
– The June 2025 survey shows most gamers have limited free storage, with 100-249 GB being the most common range (23.05%), followed by 250-499 GB (22.43%).
– Storage trends have remained consistent, with the 100-249 GB category leading in surveys from March to June, fluctuating slightly each month.
– The Oculus Quest 2 increased its dominance in VR headset usage (31.38%), while the Meta Quest 3 dropped significantly (16.28%) in June.
– The mobile RTX 4060 surpassed the desktop RTX 3060 in GPU usage (4.79% vs. 4.42%), reflecting ongoing competition between budget graphics cards.

PC gamers are facing a growing storage crisis, according to the latest Steam Hardware Survey results. While the monthly data collection method has limitations, only capturing insights from dedicated players who actively participate, the trends reveal a worrying pattern of dwindling free space across gaming rigs worldwide.

The June 2025 survey highlights that 23.05% of users have just 100–249 GB of available storage, making it the most common category. Close behind, 22.43% fall into the 250–499 GB range, while a concerning 15.66% scrape by with a mere 10–99 GB free. These figures have remained stubbornly consistent over recent months, with minor fluctuations failing to mask the underlying issue: gamers are hoarding more titles than their drives can handle.

Personal experience mirrors these findings. Even with 420 GB spread across two SSDs, managing space feels like a constant battle. Blockbuster titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, Black Myth: Wukong, and Red Dead Redemption 2 devour over 400 GB combined, forcing tough choices about which games stay installed.

Digging deeper, the data reveals a paradox. While 52.12% of surveyed users boast 1 TB or more of total storage, many still hover near the 100–249 GB free threshold. This suggests even well-equipped systems are struggling under the weight of modern game sizes. SSD performance degradation when nearing capacity adds another layer of frustration, making efficient storage management essential.

Beyond storage, the survey notes other hardware trends. Windows 11 and 16 GB of RAM remain dominant, while budget GPUs like the mobile RTX 4060 (now at 4.79%) continue trading places with the desktop RTX 3060 (down to 4.42%). In the VR space, the Oculus Quest 2 solidified its lead at 31.38%, overshadowing the Meta Quest 3’s 16.28% share, a surprising shift given recent Quest 3 promotions.

For now, the message is clear: gamers need to audit their libraries or invest in additional storage. With titles growing ever larger, that 1 TB drive won’t feel spacious for long.
