Why Fans Are Upset With the Switch 2’s Screen

The Nintendo Switch 2 has sparked heated debates among gamers, particularly regarding its display technology. While the console boasts a bright and vibrant LCD screen, some users have raised concerns about performance issues like ghosting and refresh rates. Fast-paced games reportedly appear blurry in motion, and questions linger about whether its HDR capabilities meet industry standards.

At the heart of the issue lies how screens render motion. Video games create movement by rapidly displaying sequential images, and the quality of that motion depends on two key factors: refresh rate (measured in Hertz) and response time (measured in milliseconds). A higher refresh rate means smoother visuals, while a lower response time ensures sharper motion clarity. The Switch 2 supports a 120Hz refresh rate, which should theoretically deliver smooth gameplay. However, independent tests reveal its response time ranges between 17.1ms and 33.3ms, lagging behind many modern gaming displays that aim for under 10ms.

Adding to the debate is the console’s HDR performance. While it technically supports High Dynamic Range, its peak brightness falls short of the 1,000 nits typically required for true HDR. This means colors and contrast may not be as vivid as on premium displays, though the difference may not be noticeable to the average player.

Despite these technical shortcomings, real-world impressions suggest the Switch 2’s screen still delivers an enjoyable experience. Games remain colorful and engaging, proving that raw specs don’t always dictate enjoyment. For those deeply invested in performance metrics, the limitations might be frustrating. But for most players, the console’s charm lies in its games, not just its display specs.

At the end of the day, gaming is about fun, not just numbers. Whether racing in Mario Kart or exploring vast open worlds, the Switch 2’s screen holds up well enough to keep players immersed. So while debates over milliseconds and HDR standards rage on, the best advice might be to simply pick up the controller and play.
