Borderlands 4 has officially revealed its pricing structure, and fans might be pleasantly surprised. The standard edition will retail for $70, undercutting recent industry trends where major titles like Mario Kart World and The Outer Worlds have pushed prices toward $80. This decision comes despite Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford’s earlier controversial remarks suggesting dedicated fans would pay a premium if necessary.
While the base game sticks to the $70 benchmark, Gearbox is rolling out multiple premium editions for those seeking extra content. The $100 Deluxe Edition includes bonus in-game items, while the $130 Super Deluxe Edition bundles additional story expansions. Surprisingly, the $150 Collector’s Edition doesn’t even include a physical copy of the game, just exclusive merchandise.
Post-launch, players can expect two Story Packs (included with the Super Deluxe Edition), each introducing new vault hunters, explorable regions, and missions. Four Bounty Packs will also drop later, featuring fresh areas and challenging boss encounters. Pricing for these add-ons hasn’t been confirmed yet, but they’re positioned as substantial expansions rather than minor DLC.
During a recent PAX East panel, Pitchford acknowledged the tricky balancing act of game pricing. He pointed to rising development costs, Borderlands 4’s budget reportedly doubles that of its predecessor, while recognizing consumer sensitivity to price hikes. The goal, he emphasized, is to maximize sales to fund future projects without alienating players.
Interestingly, 2K isn’t applying a uniform pricing strategy across its lineup. For example, Mafia: The Old Country launches this summer at $50, targeting a broader audience. Meanwhile, speculation swirls around GTA 6’s potential $100 price tag, though Rockstar Games has yet to confirm anything.
Borderlands 4 arrives on September 12 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version planned for a later date. Whether the $70 base price will set a precedent or remain an exception in an era of escalating costs remains to be seen.
