The video game industry faces another significant workforce reduction as Eidos Montréal, the developer of titles like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has laid off 124 employees. This move coincides with the departure of studio head David Anfossi, who had been with the company for nearly two decades. The studio, owned by the Embracer Group, attributed the cuts to evolving project requirements and their subsequent impact on production and support teams.

In a public statement, the studio described the day as profoundly difficult, emphasizing the necessity to adapt and focus its efforts where they can be most impactful. Leadership expressed deep gratitude to the affected team members, clarifying that the decision was in no way a reflection of their talent or dedication. The priority now is to support those departing with care and respect while ensuring continuity for the remaining teams.

Regarding David Anfossi’s exit, the studio thanked him for his contributions and wished him well. A transition plan for new leadership is currently in progress, with further updates promised once finalized. Anfossi originally joined Eidos Montréal in 2007 as a producer, rising to lead the studio through major projects.

This restructuring follows the studio’s acquisition by Embracer Group in 2022. Reports had indicated Eidos Montréal was slated to develop a new entry in the Deus Ex franchise, a project that was ultimately canceled. This cancellation is part of a broader, devastating Embracer Group restructuring program that has led to over 4,500 job losses across the conglomerate’s many studios.

Eidos Montréal is not alone in announcing cuts this season. Earlier this month, Epic Games revealed plans to eliminate over 1,000 positions, citing a downturn in engagement for its flagship title, Fortnite. In March, Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind Tomb Raider, also confirmed layoffs while assuring fans that projects like Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst continue in development.
