Without this built-in oversight, the potential for data exfiltration, system drift, or unauthorized changes escalates dramatically, negating the efficiency gains.
This proliferation of AI tools introduces a significant shadow IT problem, but with greater consequences. Employees are often encouraged or mandated to build their own AI assistants and workflows. These user-created agents can persist with powerful service account credentials and API tokens, creating sprawling, unmanaged attack surfaces. Just as IT departments have historically had to clean up unsanctioned software and hardware, they now face the monumental task of discovering, overseeing, and securing a potential fleet of thousands of departmental AI agents. Proactive investment in central management platforms is no longer optional; it is a critical budgetary imperative to prevent security breaches and operational chaos.
Another looming issue is the lifecycle management of these agents. As employees change roles or leave the company, the AI assistants they created risk becoming orphaned “zombie projects.” These neglected programs continue to consume computational resources and may operate with outdated logic or permissions. Establishing a clear retirement and decommissioning policy for AI agents is a necessary component of governance. Since these agents constitute company intellectual property, processes must be in place to systematically identify and sunset them when they are no longer actively managed or tied to a valid business function, thereby controlling costs and mitigating risk.
Finally, the financial calculus of agentic AI often surprises leaders. Many organizations discover that the costs of deploying and maintaining generative and agentic AI are substantially higher than anticipated. The return on investment should not be viewed purely through the lens of replacing human labor. Instead, the focus should be on augmenting capabilities and automating specific, well-defined tasks. The pricing model is rarely as simple as per-seat software; it involves variable cloud compute costs, ongoing development, and essential governance overhead. A strategic, measured approach to implementation, with realistic budgeting for the total cost of ownership, is essential to avoid financial overruns while achieving sustainable operational advantages.
