Amazon’s generative AI-powered assistant, Alexa Plus, is now officially available nationwide in the United States. This marks a significant expansion from its initial Early Access program, offering a smarter, more conversational experience to all Prime members at no extra cost. For those without a Prime subscription, a new free tier provides limited access, while a standalone $20 monthly plan offers unlimited use. This rollout represents a major evolution for the voice assistant, moving it beyond simple commands into a more capable AI companion.

The service launched in an Early Access phase back in March 2025 and has been gradually expanding to millions of users since. According to Daniel Rausch, Amazon’s vice president of Alexa and Echo, the assistant is now exiting that limited program and is fully available across the country. Early Access has also recently begun in Canada and Mexico, with a closed Beta underway in several European nations including the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

Access to Alexa Plus is structured through three distinct tiers. Prime members receive unlimited access to the enhanced assistant across all Alexa-enabled devices, the Alexa.com website, and the mobile app as part of their existing membership. A standalone Alexa Plus subscription costs $19.99 per month, providing the same unlimited access but without other Prime benefits like shipping or video streaming. Finally, the new Alexa Plus Chat tier is a free option for non-members, allowing them to interact with the AI through a text-based chatbot on the web and in the app, similar to services like ChatGPT, though with usage limits.

For existing Prime subscribers with Echo devices, the upgrade to Alexa Plus should arrive automatically via a software update. Users can also trigger the upgrade by saying, “Alexa, upgrade to Alexa Plus,” or by logging into their account on the Alexa.com website. Importantly, Rausch confirms that users can opt out of the upgrade initially or choose to revert to the classic Alexa experience later if they prefer.

At its core, Alexa Plus is a complete rebuild of the original assistant. It’s powered by new large language models, including Amazon’s own Nova and technology from Anthropic, shifting from a basic command system to what Amazon calls a “foundational AI assistant.” This new architecture allows it to understand and respond to natural, conversational language far more effectively.

The capabilities of the new assistant extend well beyond playing music or setting timers. It can now handle complex queries, manage family calendars and meal plans, provide detailed step-by-step recipe instructions, and even help with tasks like booking restaurant reservations, scheduling rideshares, arranging home repairs, or purchasing event tickets. The voice assistant has also been redesigned to make creating and managing smart home routines with simple voice commands much easier.

A parallel text-based chatbot experience is available on Alexa.com and is now prominently featured in the redesigned mobile app. This interface is tailored for deeper research, content generation, and planning. Rausch notes that since the launch, engagement with the Alexa Plus voice assistant has doubled, with customer usage increasing week over week. The chatbot component is newer, with the web interface launching just last month. He expressed enthusiasm that Prime members now have unlimited access to this advanced AI tool as a core benefit of their subscription, acknowledging that many consumers are hesitant to pay an additional monthly fee for a standalone AI chatbot service.
